NordVPN Review: Should You Choose It Over ExpressVPN and Surfshark?

I’ve been using NordVPN for about a year now picked it up initially because I travel occasionally for work and kept running into issues with public WiFi security. Here’s what a year of regular use actually looks like, including the things most reviews gloss over.

    What You’re Actually Paying For

A VPN does three main things: encrypts your internet traffic, hides your real IP address, and lets you appear to be browsing from a different country. NordVPN does all three well. The question is whether the specific extras it adds over cheaper alternatives justify the price for your situation.

For most home users who mainly want to secure public WiFi connections and occasionally access geo-restricted content a cheaper VPN like Surfshark does the job adequately. NordVPN’s advantages become more relevant if you need the fastest possible speeds, advanced security features like Double VPN, or the most reliable streaming unblocking.

    Speed The NordLynx Difference

NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol based on WireGuard is genuinely fast. On most connections the speed reduction from the VPN is small enough to be unnoticeable during browsing and streaming. When I tested it against my unprotected connection the difference was typically 10 to 15 percent which is negligible for normal use.

OpenVPN through NordVPN is slower more like 30 to 40 percent reduction. This matters if you have a slow connection to begin with. For anyone with a reasonable broadband connection using NordLynx the speed feels close to unprotected browsing.

Surfshark is competitive on speed. ExpressVPN is also fast but uses a different protocol. The differences between the top three VPNs on speed are small enough that for most users they won’t matter practically.

    Security Features What Actually Matters

AES-256 encryption is the industry standard and all major VPNs use it. What differentiates NordVPN is the additional layers. The Kill Switch cuts internet access if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly preventing your real IP from being exposed during reconnection. This works correctly in my experience and has triggered a handful of times without exposing my actual connection.

Threat Protection blocks known malicious domains and ad trackers before they load. It works at the DNS level rather than requiring a browser extension. This is useful independently of privacy concerns it reduces ad load and blocks some tracking even when you’re not actively thinking about security.

Double VPN routes traffic through two servers rather than one. Speed drops noticeably and I rarely use it for daily browsing, but for genuinely sensitive situations it adds a meaningful layer.

The no-logs policy has been independently audited multiple times. This matters because a VPN company claiming they don’t log your activity is meaningless without third-party verification. NordVPN has the audit record to back the claim.

    Streaming The Practical Reality

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, and YouTube geo-restrictions are what most Indian users care about when buying a VPN. NordVPN handles these reliably. I’ve accessed US Netflix, UK BBC iPlayer, and Japan-specific content without issues. The key is using servers specifically optimized for streaming rather than random servers NordVPN labels these clearly in the app.

Streaming services actively try to block VPN IP addresses and occasionally a server stops working for a specific platform. Switching to a different server in the same country resolves it immediately in my experience. This is not unique to NordVPN all VPNs deal with this cat-and-mouse game.

    Interface and Daily Use

The map-based interface looks good but I use the server list more often. Quick Connect finds the fastest available server automatically which is what I use 90 percent of the time. The interface is consistent across Windows, Android, and iOS learning it once means you know it everywhere.

The app runs quietly in the background and starts automatically on startup if you configure it that way. Connection is typically under 3 seconds for nearby servers. I’ve had maybe three unexpected disconnections in a year which the Kill Switch handled correctly.

NordVPN vs ExpressVPN vs Surfshark Honest Comparison

ExpressVPN is the premium option. Reliable, well-established, excellent support. The main argument against it is price it’s consistently the most expensive of the three with limited features added for that premium.

Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous device connections and is priced lower than NordVPN on multi-year plans. If you have many devices or want to share with family on one account, Surfshark’s unlimited connection policy is a genuine differentiator. Speed is slightly behind NordVPN on average but the gap has narrowed.

NordVPN’s advantages are the server network size 6,400+ servers across 111 countries gives more options and less congestion the Threat Protection feature, and consistently strong streaming performance. The 6-device simultaneous connection limit is adequate for most individuals but limiting for families versus Surfshark’s unlimited option.

    Price What to Actually Pay

This is where most VPN reviews are misleading. The monthly price is irrelevant nobody should pay the monthly rolling rate. The value is entirely in multi-year plans.

The 2-year plan works out to roughly ₹270 to ₹330 per month paid upfront as a lump sum. The 1-year plan is around ₹390 to ₹450 per month. The month-to-month plan at ₹1,100 per month should only be used for genuine short-term needs like a single trip abroad.

NordVPN runs promotional pricing frequently Black Friday, New Year, and other seasonal events regularly add extra months or reduce per-month cost further. Timing your purchase around these sales meaningfully reduces the total cost.

Check pricing directly on NordVPN’s website before buying as prices fluctuate and current promotions may offer better terms than listed here.

    Subscription Plan Comparison

Plan Effective Monthly Cost Best For
2-Year Standard ₹270 to ₹330 Best value long-term regular users
    1-Year Standard ₹390 to ₹450 Balanced commitment without 2-year lock-in
Monthly Rolling Around ₹1,110 Short-term travel use only
2-Year Ultimate Bundle ₹590 to ₹650 Includes NordPass and 1TB cloud storage

Who Should and Shouldn’t Buy NordVPN

Good choice for: frequent travelers using public WiFi, users who want reliable streaming access to international content, anyone handling sensitive information who wants verified privacy credentials, users who want a polished multi-platform experience.

Consider alternatives if: you need unlimited device connections for a large family Surfshark handles this better. You want the absolute cheapest option Surfshark or ProtonVPN are worth comparing. You want simpler pricing without evaluating plan options ExpressVPN is more straightforward but more expensive.

A year in and NordVPN has been reliable, fast enough that I don’t notice it running, and effective for the streaming and security use cases I bought it for. The 2-year plan pricing makes it reasonable for regular use.
